This is a “community” based marae, whose mission is "for the people". Wainuiomata Marae was first registered as an incorporated society on the 4th April, 1973 and recently changed to a Trust in November 2008. From the 1970’s to the present Wainuiomata Marae has been a focal point for local whānau, hapū and iwi. In 2006 Wainuiomata Marae set about exploring economic opportunities utilizing the marae and its people to sustain the marae facilities and rejuvenate support and participation in the marae.

• To maintain, enhance and practice the concepts of Māori, including Te Reo (language), Tikanga (Customs), Kawa (Protocol), Taonga (Treasures), Tukuiho (Ancestral).
• To provide an urban model by being conscious, tolerant and supportive of various Tauira (Visitors) here and the understanding of Māori concepts.
• To work in conjunction with all tribes and various races which make up the Community at large of Wainuiomata.
• To practice the concepts of a bi-cultural Marae for the Community.

The Trustees of Wainuiomata Marae are preparing a Marae Development Plan to guide future management and investment decisions to ensure the marae continues to meet the needs of the Wainuiomata Community in the 21^st Century.

The draft Marae Development Plan (MDP) can be viewed and any comments/feedback can be emailed to [email protected] by Monday 14 Dec 2020. 

Background: The Wainuiomata Marae has been an important and vital community facility for almost 5 decades. The vision for establishing an urban marae at Wainuiomata originated in the 1960s out of concern by community Kaumatua for their people’s needs. Their vision was for a ‘house of people’ where people of all cultures and ethnicities could live in harmony under the guidance of tikanga Māori and within the spirituality of Pukeatua.   

It was developed in the 1970s by a group of extraordinary leaders with huge support from community volunteers, some of whom continue to support and maintain the marae to this day.

Fast forward to 2020. Following several hui and a workshop with Wainuiomata Marae Trustees in July 2020 a draft Marae Development Plan has been prepared. The initial part of the process involved re-confirming the values and purpose of the marae and identifying how the marae has been used in the past and how it will be used in the future.

Current and Future Activities (the main points)

1: The marae is used by a wide range of groups, for a wide range of activities some of these are cultural and others are for community and business use.

2: The cultural activities occur regularly (weekly, fortnightly or monthly). However, there is a need to develop cultural capability around marae tikanga and Te Ao Māori generally, and to enable the younger generation into management roles.

3: Given the number of different activities and the prospect of increasing or changing use of the marae, the system and processes currently used to manage the marae activities should be reviewed to determine if they are robust enough to meet future demands.

4: There is a constant stream of bookings from community and government and other groups throughout the year. These could be followed up for new bookings.

5: Current use of the marae does not cover the cost of maintaining and operating the marae.

6: The marae facilities need maintenance and upgrade. Maintenance and repair work have generally been reactive. However, a proactive approach should be considered and managed by a Marae Maintenance Plan

7: The marae does not currently have the facilities or management capacity necessary to accommodate potential future uses such as papakainga housing and a hauora hub.  

Our Goals: We also identified the main goals that the MDP would address and listed ideas on how we could achieve these goals.  

1. Create/Update the Story of the Marae and its People. This includes creating an archive of important historical documents and photos, as well as photos and korero of marae carvings, panels and other cultural features. 2. Establish a Sustainable Income for the marae
3. This topic was widely discussed at the MDP wananga with a range ideas, options and actions suggested (See list below with associated actions). These could form the basis of a Sustainable Income Strategy.
4. Review Management and Booking processes and charge out rates
5. Enable Succession in two main areas:
   • Cultural Capacity (Matauranga Māori; Marae Tikanga/Kawa)
   • Governance, Management and Operation of the marae
6. Address/Resolve significant Maintenance Issues and manage others
7. Upgrade/Develop the Marae and Grounds for future services and uses, including:
   • Social Housing - Papakainga Project with Kainga Ora
   • Health and Social Services Clinic
   • Tihei Rangatahi Facility
   • Catering Business and Training
   • Increased Corporate Customers
   • Access to the hillside / rongo / pathways /
8. Develop effective Communications with the local and wider community

What Next:

3. Once we have received your feedback we will finalise the Marae Development Plan.
4. The Wainuiomata Marae Trusts can then use the plan to support and prioritise decisions concerning the management and maintenance of the marae.
5. The Marae Development Plan can be used to support a range of funding applications (e.g. funding for maintenance work or establishment of a Hauora Hub).
